With the fall season in full swing, changing out summer elements for cozy fall details can take your outdoor space from standard to stunning. Learn how to transition your outdoor decor by adding texture, updating color and changing greenery.

1. Add Texture

When the seasons change, you want to make sure your outdoor space can make accommodations for the difference in temperatures. One way to accomplish this is by adding texture to your outdoor furniture by including a touch of warmth. You can do this by switching out a lightweight linen for a thick knitted throw. Pair this with outdoor pillows of different textures, such as faux leather, linen or sequins, to add character to your outdoor furniture. Also, consider your flooring and swap summer-themed mats for fall floor coverings, such as a textured doormat or a patterned outdoor rug.

2. Update With Color

Summertime colors draw in vibrancy and boldness, but when the cool season sets in, you can tone down the vivid summer hues for a calming or muted palette. Go for monochromatic fall colors that mimic changing leaves, such as burnt orange or pumpkin. You can also mix warm colors, such as burgundies, browns and oranges, to create a look that offers a subtle sense of vibrancy. You can also add color with lighting, too. Hang warm-colored, bulb lights around a canopy or the head of your doorway for an added touch of warm glow in the night.

3. Switch Out Greenery

A change in weather means it’s time to swap out summertime greenery for fall season plants. If you’re looking to update your outdoor space with beautiful blooms, opt for cool season flowers, such as snapdragons, peonies and pansies. Plant fall season vegetables or herbs early to watch them grow through the season. You can also plant shrubbery or group plants together to create an interesting fall arrangement.

Just as you would swap light summer clothes and shoes for warm fall sweaters and boots, you want to update the look of your outdoor space to seamlessly transition with the seasons.
